The Promise is an elementary-level Macmillan Reader by R. L. Scott-Buccleuch. It follows Pedro and Maria Moreira, a couple in Brazil who have little money and few prospects when their son Palito is born. An old woman predicts that the child will bring them wealth and happiness. As Palito grows up, he shows remarkable talent for football and eventually joins one of Brazil’s leading clubs, becoming successful and famous. However, a problem with his legs and a serious accident threaten to end his football career. The story examines the relationship between hope, family expectations, talent and uncertainty, showing that success can be vulnerable to events beyond a person’s control. Its controlled language and clear plot make it suitable for learners of English at elementary level.
