Tóm tắt nội dung

English as Medium Instruction (EMI) is considered a better way of solving non-English majored students' language problems than teaching English as a single subject in this era of technological development and global internationalization, as well as the remarkable impact of the 4th Industrial Revolution, than teaching English as a single subject so that they can meet the employability demand in their future profession. However, educational scholars and lecturers at Asia Pacific universities are still concerned about EMI adoption. This research aimed to investigate the technical students’ perspectives towards applying for an EMI program in a public technical university in Vietnam; To achieve these, the research used both qualitative and quantitative data. At the first stage, data was collected via an online questionnaire delivered to 123 EMI students from nine different academic disciplines including Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Technology, Budgeting, Professional Experience and Career Planning, Software quality assurance, Face detective technique, Transmission Technology, Financial Management and Micro Economic. Later, In-depth interview was used on 20 random participants to determine more clearly the factors affecting EMI learning from students’ perspectives. The findings shed light on EMI implementation for ESL students in tertiary education, as students’ perspectives on EMI courses’ benefits are quite positive. However, this implementation also faced several challenges because of student’s poor ability in English interaction, insufficient foreign knowledge, vocabulary shortage, irrelevant course content, EMI lecturers’ English competency and pedagogical methods, oversized classroom, and students’ own motivations for the EMI course. This study is hoped to have an opportunity of sharing the results and some recommendations to help improve and develop EMI courses for the interested EMI stakeholders at the higher education levels.
