As personalized learning continues to grow in popularity in the field of language education, this study seeks to determine how effective personalized language learning will be in order for 10th grade students at Tan Trao High School to develop their selfdirected study skills in English. The mixed-methods design utilized both quantitative and qualitative research. A group of 10th grade students participated in a personalized language learning program that supported autonomous learning. Data from the study consisted of pre- and postquestionnaires, learning diaries and interviews. Analytical techniques for the quantitative portion of the data included descriptive statistics and t-tests; the qualitative portion was analyzed for thematic patterns to gain greater insight into students' learning experiences. The results of the study showed that personalized language learning methods contributed positively to self-study skills, motivation, and learning autonomy among students. The majority of the students improved their abilities to plan, identify appropriate methods of studying, and reflect on their learning. However, several obstacles emerged throughout the process; namely, the students were unaccustomed to autonomous learning and struggled with maintaining their learning discipline. The findings indicate that personalized learning has the potential to develop the self-study ability for English learners through teacher provided strategies to support their learning. The results of the study are likely to provide insights for English teachers and education administrators with an interest in implementing personalized learning in situations similar to those studied in this research.
