The research examines how game-based instruction affects Vietnamese lower secondary school students’ English vocabulary learning. The research employed a quasiexperimental design with two complete classes (n = 90) over a period of five weeks. The experimental group received 14 vocabulary lessons with language games embedded, while the control group received normal vocabulary lessons characterised by the teacher’s presentation and students doing exercises individually or in pairs. Data were collected through student pre-intervention and post-intervention tests, pre-intervention and post-intervention motivation surveys, and classroom observations during the interventions. The results showed that the experimental group outperformed the control group in vocabulary retention and exhibited higher motivation levels. The research evidence indicates that game-based instruction has the potential to create favorable conditions for students to stay motivated and learn English vocabulary effectively. The research provides educators with useful suggestions for enhancing vocabulary learning through games, as well as identifying specific research boundaries that require further investigation in future studies.
