Speaking is a core skill in English learning, requiring students to apply effective strategies to improve their performance. Among these strategies, groupwork has gained increasing attention as a method to enhance students’ speaking ability. While previous research has explored either student or teacher perspectives, studies examining both perspectives remain limited. This research examines teachers’ and students’ perspectives on the use of groupwork in English speaking lessons in a private high school in Vietnam. Using a mixed-methods approach, data were collected through interviews with four EFL teachers and survey questionnaires from 118 students. The results illustrate that groupwork is highly valued, as it helps improve learners’ fluency, vocabulary, confidence, and collaborative skills. However, the study also identifies challenges, including unequal participation, the use of the mother tongue, and time constraints. Consequently, this study emphasizes the important role of teachers in providing clear instructions, designing effective tasks, and supporting students to enhance the effectiveness of groupwork in speaking lessons.
