This book provides a comprehensive foundation in biochemistry, beginning with a review of core biological and chemical knowledge to help learners understand the molecular nature of life. It introduces biochemistry as the science that studies the structure, function, and chemical reactions of biological molecules within cells. The content focuses on analyzing amino acids – the basic building blocks of proteins – and clarifies the close relationship between the spatial structure and biological function of proteins, while also presenting modern techniques used to study proteins. The book continues to explore the role of energy and metabolism in living systems, emphasizing enzymes as biological catalysts and the principles of enzyme kinetics. Subsequent chapters present the structure, properties, and metabolic pathways of carbohydrates and lipids, and the role of cell membranes. Finally, the book analyzes nitrogen metabolism, the urea cycle, as well as the structure and metabolism of nucleotides and nucleic acids, thereby clarifying the molecular basis of heredity and the expression of genetic information in organisms.
