General Microbiology introduces the fundamentals of microbiology, focusing on the structure, growth, and diversity of bacteria, fungi, protozoans, viruses, and other microorganisms. It begins with biological macromolecules and cell formation, followed by the classification and characteristics of major microbial groups. The text covers the mechanisms of viral infection and the types of interactions between microorganisms and their hosts. Growth and metabolism describe how bacteria grow, use energy, and adapt to their environment. Other important topics include symbiosis, commensalism, parasitism, and the principles of antimicrobial therapy. The text also explains the innate and adaptive immune systems, the mechanisms of allergy, autoimmunity, and the characteristics of infectious diseases. The final chapters focus on infections of the skin, eyes, nervous system, circulatory, digestive, and respiratory systems, closely connecting microbiology to medicine.
