Abstract:

Germany, traditionally a dubbing-oriented country, has recently witnessed a growing preference for original and subtitled audiovisual content. However, conventional subtitles often intrude upon the visual composition of films, disrupting intended focal points and reducing viewers’ information uptake, especially among audiences unaccustomed to reading subtitles. This book investigates integrated titles as an alternative subtitling approach that preserves both visual aesthetics and narrative comprehension. Using eye-tracking data from over 45 participants, integrated titles designed for Pablo Romero-Fresco’s documentary Joining the Dots were evaluated based on gaze behaviour and viewer reception. Findings indicate that positioning subtitles closer to focal points enhances visual exploration, shortens reading times, and improves aesthetic appreciation. The study proposes an initial workflow and placement strategies for integrated subtitles, contributing to more respectful handling of filmic material and better preservation of original image composition and typographic identity.
