Abstract:

The book provides a foundation for the course so that students can continually contextualize new information. The book introduces biology in a “top-down” way, starting with familiar phenomena and gradually moving into molecular mechanisms. The first part helps students understand the nature of life and homeostasis, how organisms interact in ecosystems, populations, and communities, as well as the diversity and organization of life. Next, the book presents the foundations of evolution, the processes of trait formation, biological behavior, and the genetic laws that create variation. The second part delves into the molecular level—the molecules of life, the mechanisms from DNA to proteins, bioenergetics, and cell division and the errors that can occur. Finally, the book connects biology to life through the immune system, disease, biotechnology, and the bio-environmental challenges of the Anthropocene.
