Abstract:

This low-intermediate reading skills student’s book (Level 4 of 8 at Portland Community College) revolves around the theme of hobbies to develop essential reading strategies. It covers skills such as finding topics, identifying main ideas, locating supporting details, understanding pronouns, skimming and scanning, comparing and contrasting, interpreting bar graphs and tables, and summarizing. Each illustrated unit includes a vocabulary preview with self-correcting H5P exercises, a warm-up discussion, an informal audio dialogue, skill presentations with practice and review exercises, two short articles with comprehension checks, an annotation task, and a wrap-up discussion. By engaging with relatable, interest-based topics, the student’s book helps learners build reading comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking skills at a low-intermediate level.
