Abstract:

This advanced-level reading skills textbook (Level 8 of 8 at Portland Community College) centers on the theme of social justice, using mostly authentic reading materials to strengthen academic reading abilities. It focuses on key skills such as understanding vocabulary in context, identifying main and supporting ideas, recognizing implied meanings, making inferences, interpreting infographics, analyzing organizational patterns, and determining an author’s purpose and tone. Each unit features targeted vocabulary practice, visual organizers, Google Slides activities for skill development, authentic texts with comprehension checks, and extension exercises. Through engaging, real-world content, the textbook helps students refine their reading comprehension, critical thinking, and analytical skills at an advanced academic level.
