Be(com)ing a Conference Interpreter: An Ethnography of EU Interpreters as a Professional Community examines conference interpreting as a situated professional practice within the European Union institutions. Based on a four-year ethnographic study, Veerle Duflou investigates how interpreters develop professional competence through participation in a community of practice. The book explores the organizational frameworks of EU interpreting services, the experiences of beginners and newcomers, and the processes through which interpreters learn the knowledge and skills required for their work. Particular attention is given to situated learning, collaboration among colleagues, and turn management in the simultaneous interpreting booth. Drawing on observations, interviews, and institutional documents, the study challenges purely individual and cognitive views of interpreting competence and emphasizes the social, organizational, collaborative, and context-dependent nature of professional interpreting practice.
