Abstract:

This study examines the process of prioritizing private motorized transport in Bengaluru, a rapidly growing megacity in the Global South. Automobiles and their associated infrastructure—long entrenched in Western cities—have become a widespread phenomenon in megacities across the Global South. Streets that once teemed with pedestrians, carts, street vendors, and cyclists are now choked with motor vehicles, predominantly private cars. In this book, Govind Gopakumar explores this shift, analyzing the phenomenon of the automobile in Bengaluru (formerly Bangalore), a rapidly expanding city of approximately ten million people in southern India.
