For many primary school learners, grammar remains a difficult aspect of English learning. Many of them can complete exercises pretty well but when they need to talk or write, they are not sure which structures to employ. In some lessons, students can follow the content but are not very interested, especially when the lessons mainly focus on rules and written exercises. Based on this condition, this study explores the application of gamified activities in teaching grammar to Grade 5 pupils in a primary school in Hai Phong. The study involved 140 Grade 5 students from four intact classes, of which two classes formed the experimental group and the remaining two classes served as the control group. The experimental group was taught through sites such as Quizizz (now known as Wayground), Wordwall, Bamboozle, BeeClass, and certain games in the classroom. The control group was taught in a more traditional way. The data sources were grammar tests, surveys, classroom observations, learning logs and an interview with the teacher. The experimental group demonstrated slightly greater gains in grammar performance than the control group, although the difference was not statistically significant. They also took part more in class. But the pupils were not equally involved. The teacher also mentioned some problems in implementation. This suggests that gamification can be of help in grammar learning in primary level but nonetheless its success is related to the way in which the activities are structured in the classroom.
