The development of AI (Artificial Intelligence) has made big changes in education. In recent years, several AI chatbots have been introduced in public and soon widely used in research. These tools also have had strong influences on English teaching and learning in the world and particularly in Vietnam. Among them, ChatGPT emerges as the most popular chatbot which provides users with powerful features. This study explores how ChatGPT conversation feature helps non-English major students to be engaged in English classes. The research was conducted at Hanoi University of Industry and involved 101 second-year students. It employed a mixed-method approach with a survey questionnaire and semi-structured interviews for students as data collection instruments. The study findings show that ChatGPT’s conversation feature gives students many topics to practice. It also helps them feel less nervous when speaking English. However, the application of ChatGPT should only be a complementary resource and should not replace the contribution of teachers and class. The study offers practical recommendations on utilizing ChatGPT in particular, and AI tools in general, to improve English teaching and learning for university in Vietnamese context.
