Abstract:

This book analyzes how the Russian government built a model of digital authoritarianism through controlling internet infrastructure, monitoring data, and manipulating cyberspace. It clarifies how internet regulators established content filtering mechanisms, required technology companies to store data domestically, and developed tools for surveillance, access blocking, and large-scale data collection. From a cybersecurity perspective, the book shows the use of technology as a control tool – from monitoring traffic and forcing ISPs to comply with website blocking policies to deploying national firewall solutions simulating a sovereign RuNet. Furthermore, the book documents the resistance of the technology community, digital groups, and internet users through measures to circumvent censorship, protect information, and maintain freedom of access. The book clearly demonstrates the connection between internet governance policies, IT infrastructure, cybersecurity, and the level of digital freedom within the context of an authoritarian state.
