This book provides a comprehensive and scholarly study of the role of digital media and grassroots anti-corruption initiatives globally. Author Alice Mattoni analyzes how digital platforms – from social media, technology applications, online reporting systems to open source data – are used by civil society organizations, independent journalists and local communities to detect, monitor and prevent corruption. The book clarifies the collection, processing and exploitation of anti-corruption data, and discusses related challenges such as security, reliability of data sources, privacy and legal requirements. The author emphasizes the importance of “data activism” – a specific data-based social activity in this book in the field of anti-corruption. The book suggests the direction of development of power monitoring technologies in the future.
