Abstract:

Polyamines (PAs) are low-molecular-weight organic polycations derived from amino acids and play important roles in plant growth, development, and stress responses. The major plant polyamines include putrescine, spermidine, spermine, thermospermine, and cadaverine. Research using chemical and genetic approaches has demonstrated their involvement in seed germination, root development, plant architecture, flowering, senescence, fruit ripening, and in vitro regeneration. Polyamine treatments can improve seed germination, seedling growth, flower quality, and plant tolerance to drought, salinity, cold, and heat stress. Manipulating polyamine metabolism through exogenous application, biosynthetic inhibitors, or genetic modification offers potential applications in crop improvement. Polyamines also contribute to regulating fruit ripening and postharvest deterioration. In addition, plant-derived polyamines, particularly putrescine and spermidine, are considered important dietary compounds associated with human nutrition and health.
