This study examined the impact of role-playing exercises on the participation and speaking ability of non-English major students in English classes. The study included 41 second-year non-English major students from a university in Hung Yen, Vietnam. An action research design was employed in the study for eight weeks. The aim was to investigate how students participated in role-playing activities and to determine the extent to which these activities influenced their speaking ability. Data were collected using pre-speaking test and post-test, classroom observation, and questionnaire surveys. The research results showed that role-playing activities significantly increased student participation, as students became more active, confident, and eager to engage in communicative tasks. Furthermore, a comparison of speaking test results revealed significant improvements in all aspects of speaking ability. Furthermore, students expressed positive views on role-playing activities, such as improved enthusiasm, reduced anxiety, and increased confidence in speaking English. Overall, this study demonstrates that role-playing is an effective teaching tool for improving both engagement and speaking skills in EFL classrooms, highlighting the importance of interactive, learner-centered methods for non-English major students.
