The current study investigates student engagement in listening and speaking tasks in the Global Success English textbook series for sixth-grade students at a junior high school in Vietnam. Specifically, it examines the levels of engagement they require and the actual engagement demonstrated by students in classroom practice. This study addresses both theoretical and practical concerns. Theoretically, textbooks and student engagement play a crucial role in the teaching-learning process, directly influencing academic performance and educational outcomes. Practically, as Global Success is a newly implemented textbook series, understanding its impact on student interaction with learning tasks is essential. Using a systematic coding method, we analyzed all listening and speaking tasks in the series to classify task types and engagement levels. The analysis identified 219 listening and speaking tasks, with three levels of engagement required, among which active participation was the most common. However, classroom observations revealed a significant gap between the engagement levels intended by the textbook and those demonstrated by students. While most students exhibited active engagement in verbal participation, over 50% showed low or very low engagement, particularly in terms of consistent focus, positive body language, and enthusiasm. This study provides valuable insights into how listening and speaking tasks influence student engagement, helping educators optimize teaching practices when using the Global Success series to improve educational outcomes. Additionally, it suggests pedagogical solutions to enhance student engagement in classroom activities.
