Developing English speaking skills for engineering students plays an important role in improving career opportunities in the context of international integration. This study aims to explore the effectiveness of using audio recording application in role-play activities to improve the speaking skills of engineering students at Hanoi University of Industry. The study was designed as a classroom action research over ten sessions, with the participation of 62 first-year students majoring in Automotive Technology at Hanoi University of Industry. This study used a mixed method, combining qualitative and quantitative data collected from the pretest and post-test, students’ audio recordings, survey, and classroom observations. The data collected from pre-test, post-test and students’ audio recordings indicated that students could perform better after the intervention of using audio recording applications in role-play activities, demonstrating that using audio in role-play activities helped students improve their speaking skills, including vocabulary, grammar, fluency and coherence, and pronunciation. Besides, the data collected from the survey and classroom observation showed that students had positive opinions toward the effectiveness of audio recording application when used in role-play activities. The results of this study suggested integrating this method into foreign language training programs to improve the quality of teaching and learning.
