Tóm tắt nội dung

Meaning and Linguistic Variation: The Third Wave in Sociolinguistics examines the relationship between linguistic variation and social meaning in sociolinguistic research. The book traces the development of variationist sociolinguistics from early demographic studies and the First Wave through the ethnographic approaches of the Second Wave to the Third Wave, which emphasizes indexicality, stylistic practice, speaker agency, and the construction of social meaning. Drawing on Penelope Eckert’s research and intellectual development, the book explores how linguistic forms acquire social meanings and how speakers use variation to construct and negotiate social identities and relationships. It also examines communities of practice, linguistic style, social categories, indexical fields, and the role of social meaning in linguistic change. The book provides a coherent account of the development and theoretical foundations of the Third Wave approach to sociolinguistic variation.
