The Whispering Knights by Penelope Lively follows William, Susie and Martha, three children whose game involving a witch's brew and a spell in an old barn has unexpected consequences. They awaken a dark force linked to the distant past and must face the danger of what they have summoned. In Penelope Lively's fantasy, William and Susie think they are playing a harmless game when they prepare a witch's brew in an old barn and recite a spell. Their friend Martha is less confident, and the children soon realize that they have summoned a threatening force from the distant past. Miss Hepplewhite's warning underlines the danger of treating old powers as entertainment. The novel combines folklore, suspense and childhood curiosity while examining the consequences of actions that initially seem innocent.
